How to build a positive online reputation from scratch

Author: Bill Ross, founder of Emulent Published Article

Key takeaways

  • New businesses, rebrands and companies that never invested online share the same problem: a thin presence with few or no reviews, empty profiles and little to reassure a searcher.
  • Thin profiles cost customers. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey reported that nearly half of consumers will not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews, and most expect at least a four-star rating.
  • Start with the foundations: a complete, verified Google Business Profile that follows Google’s guidelines, consistent business details across directories and a clear website.
  • Build reviews over time by asking every customer from day one, without incentives, gating or fake reviews.
  • Publish helpful content, earn local mentions and respond to every review so your reputation grows with your customer base.

When a potential customer searches a new business, they may find an empty Google profile, inactive social accounts and nothing else. That emptiness raises doubts even if your work is excellent. The good news is that a credible reputation can be built quickly with the right foundations and a consistent routine. This Emulent guide covers what makes a new reputation credible, how to build reviews from zero, how to handle early negative feedback and how reputation connects to the rest of your marketing.

What makes a new business reputation credible?

Completeness, consistency and real customer voices.

Credibility signal What to do
A complete Google Business Profile verified, with the correct business name, address or service area, phone, hours, categories, services, photos and a clear description. Follow Google’s guidelines for representing your business, including using your real business name without added keywords.
Consistent details everywhere the same name, address and phone number on your website, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, Facebook, the BBB and relevant industry directories.
Real photos your team, vehicles, location and work, not stock images.
A clear website services, service area, credentials, licenses, insurance, team bios and contact options.
Reviews the first 10 to 20 genuine reviews change how searchers see you. BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses.

Emulent tells new clients the same thing: a reputation is built from good work plus a routine for showing it.

How do you build reviews from zero?

Ask every customer from the first job, and make it easy.

  • Create your Google review link or QR code in your Business Profile and add it to receipts, invoices, follow-up emails and leave-behind cards.
  • Ask at the moment of satisfaction: right after a job is finished or a purchase is delivered.
  • Ask everyone the same way: Google’s policy prohibits selectively soliciting positive reviews, and the FTC’s 2024 rule bans fake reviews and review suppression.
  • Never offer incentives: Google treats discounts or gifts for reviews as prohibited.
  • Do not ask friends, family or staff to review the business; Google treats that as a conflict of interest.
  • Follow up once: a single reminder a few days later.
  • Spread across platforms: start with Google, then the sites customers in your industry use, such as Yelp, Facebook, Angi, Houzz or Healthgrades.

In one Emulent engagement, a newly opened plumbing company asked every customer for a review from its first week and passed several dozen genuine Google reviews within its first months. Results depend on job volume and service quality.

How do you handle early negative reviews?

One bad review stands out more when you have few. Respond well and keep building volume.

  • Reply promptly and calmly: thank the reviewer, acknowledge the experience and offer a direct contact to resolve it.
  • Fix the issue: early complaints often reveal process gaps that are easy to correct while you are small.
  • Do not panic or retaliate: arguing publicly or posting fake positive reviews to bury a complaint makes things worse and breaks platform rules.
  • Report only reviews that break rules, such as spam or reviews from non-customers.
  • For healthcare practices: never confirm the reviewer is a patient or mention treatment; use general language and invite them to call.
  • Keep asking every customer: new genuine reviews put any single complaint in context.

How does building a reputation connect to your broader marketing?

Every early investment pays off across channels.

  • Local search: a complete profile, consistent citations and growing reviews support your local SEO and Maps visibility.
  • AI recommendations: AI assistants increasingly answer “who’s good near me” questions using reviews, profiles and mentions, so a thin presence can leave you out.
  • Website conversions: real reviews, credentials and team photos on your website reassure first-time visitors.
  • Local mentions: sponsorships, chamber of commerce membership, local news and community involvement create citations and links.
  • Ecommerce: new online stores can build trust with verified buyer reviews; for ecommerce, Emulent recommends Shopify with a review app from launch.

How can the Emulent team help?

Emulent sets up and optimizes Google Business Profiles, builds citations, launches review request systems and creates website content that establishes credibility from day one. A caveat: reviews and visibility grow with real customer volume, so there is no legitimate shortcut to hundreds of reviews in a few weeks.
