How to evaluate link quality beyond domain authority scores

Author: Bill Ross, founder of Emulent Published Article

Key takeaways

  • Domain Authority, Domain Rating and Authority Score are third-party estimates. Moz itself says Domain Authority is not a Google ranking factor and has no effect on search results.
  • Scores differ between tools and can be inflated by link schemes, so use them only as rough filters.
  • Topical relevance, editorial standards, placement and a real audience say more about a link’s worth than any single score.
  • A weighted scoring matrix keeps link decisions consistent and makes reporting more honest.
  • Apply the same criteria to your existing profile to see which sources to pursue more of.

Domain authority is the most quoted backlink metric and the most misleading when used alone. A high score can hide a site that sells links to anyone, while a modest score can belong to the trade publication your buyers read every week. This Emulent guide covers the limits of authority scores, the factors to weigh instead and how to build a scoring system.

Why is domain authority an incomplete quality metric?

Because it is a vendor’s prediction, not a measure Google uses. Search Engine Journal’s ranking factor review quotes Moz stating that Domain Authority is not a Google ranking factor and has no effect on results.

  • It can be inflated. Sites in link schemes can raise their scores without gaining real trust.
  • It ignores relevance. A general entertainment site with a high score and a niche industry blog with a lower one serve very different purposes.
  • It ignores audience. A site can keep a high score from old links while getting almost no visitors today.
  • It varies by tool. The same domain might show different numbers in Moz, Ahrefs and Semrush because each uses its own crawl and model.

Scores are useful for sorting long prospect lists quickly. They should not decide which links to pursue.

What factors should you evaluate instead?

Several signals together.

Factor What to check
Topical relevance is the site, and the specific linking page, about your industry or an adjacent one?
A real audience estimated traffic, engaged comments and newsletter readers are good signs the site is genuine. Google’s John Mueller has said a link is not worth more simply because the linking page gets lots of search traffic, so treat traffic as evidence of a real site rather than a ranking formula.
Editorial standards named authors, editing and the ability to say no.
Placement links in article text beat footer, sidebar or author-bio links.
Audience fit do the site’s readers overlap with your customers? That brings referral visits and leads.
Upkeep recent publishing, working pages and no signs of abandonment.
Selling signals “write for us” pages offering paid dofollow links, or outbound links to unrelated casinos and pills, are red flags under Google’s spam policies.

Turn the factors into a weighted matrix your team applies the same way every time.

  • Weight each factor; many teams give relevance the most points, followed by editorial standards and placement.
  • Set a minimum score below which you do not pursue an opportunity.
  • Rank outreach by score so effort goes to the best prospects first.
  • Report average quality scores alongside link counts to shift focus from volume to value.

In regulated fields such as healthcare marketing, add a credibility check: medical associations and peer-reviewed sources should score higher than general wellness blogs.

Score what you already have.

  • Score your top 50 referring domains to see whether your strongest sources are genuinely strong.
  • Identify your best links and look for more sites like them.
  • Flag clusters of irrelevant, low-traffic or non-editorial links. Most need no action, since Google ignores much low-quality linking, but they show what not to repeat.

Give strong links somewhere worth landing.

How can the Emulent team help?

Emulent evaluates link prospects and existing profiles with a multi-factor scoring system and builds outreach around the highest-scoring opportunities. A caveat: any scoring model is an estimate of how search engines weigh links, so review it against your ranking and referral results over time. Contact the Emulent team to assess your links.
