How to set up GA4 conversion tracking that matches real business results

Author: Bill Ross, founder of Emulent Published Article

Key takeaways

  • GA4 calls conversions “key events.” You choose which events count, and those choices should match what your sales team calls a lead or sale.
  • GA4’s enhanced measurement can log form_start and form_submit automatically, but those events can miss AJAX forms or fire on unsuccessful submissions, so verify them.
  • Thank-you pages or success-only custom events are the most reliable form tracking methods.
  • Calls need a call tracking tool such as CallRail or CallTrackingMetrics, with a minimum duration so misdials do not count as leads.
  • Test every key event monthly and after any site change, and compare GA4 counts with your CRM.

The most common analytics problem is not missing data but tracking the wrong things. Many GA4 setups report pageviews and sessions while the form submissions, calls and purchases that pay the bills are miscounted or missing. This Emulent guide covers how to define key events, track forms and calls, and keep tracking accurate.

What counts as a conversion for your business?

Whatever your sales team counts as a real opportunity. Ask them how new business actually arrives before opening GA4.

Conversion type Examples
Primary key events contact or quote forms, demo requests, qualified calls, booked appointments and purchases.
Secondary events newsletter signups, guide downloads and webinar registrations that build pipeline.
Engagement signals pricing page views, video plays and scrolls on service pages. GA4’s enhanced measurement records a scroll event when 90% of a page’s depth becomes visible.

Mark only primary and important secondary actions as key events. Google renamed GA4 conversions to key events in March 2024; “conversions” now means the key events you import into Google Ads for bidding.

How do you set up form submission tracking in GA4?

Choose the most reliable method your forms allow.

  • Thank-you pages: redirect each form to a unique confirmation URL and create a key event on that page view. This is the most reliable option because it fires only after a successful submission.
  • Success-only custom events: for AJAX forms that do not redirect, push a dataLayer event from the form’s success callback and send it to GA4 through Google Tag Manager.
  • Tag Manager form triggers or enhanced measurement form_submit: quick to enable, but they can fire when validation fails or miss forms built with JavaScript, so test before relying on them.

Never send names, emails or phone numbers to GA4 as event parameters. For ecommerce, we recommend Shopify, whose Google channel sends purchase events to GA4.

How do you track phone calls as conversions?

With call tracking tied to your marketing sources.

  • Use dynamic number insertion from CallRail, CallTrackingMetrics or similar tools, which shows a different number by traffic source and ties calls to sessions.
  • Connect the tool to GA4 so qualifying calls send an event you can mark as a key event.
  • Set a minimum call length to filter misdials and spam. Google Ads uses 60 seconds as its default for call conversions, and many service businesses use 60 to 90 seconds.
  • Track clicks on tap-to-call links as a separate, lower-value event, since a click does not guarantee a call.

For home services companies, calls are often the main lead source, so this step can change which channels look profitable.

How do you validate that your tracking is accurate?

Test it on a schedule, because tracking breaks without warning.

  • Submit every tracked form and make test calls monthly, confirming each appears in GA4.
  • Compare GA4 key event counts with CRM lead counts monthly and investigate large gaps.
  • Re-test after any site update, form change, plugin update or migration.
  • Use DebugView with Tag Assistant to watch events fire in real time while testing.
  • Expect some gap from consent choices and ad blockers, and note it in reports.

Accurate key events are the base for every report and decision in an enterprise SEO program.

How can the Emulent team help?

Emulent sets up and validates GA4 key events, form and call tracking and CRM matching as a standard part of SEO engagements. A caveat: privacy settings and browser restrictions mean GA4 will never match your CRM exactly, so aim for consistent tracking and explain the gap rather than chasing perfect counts.
